-What inspired the film “Boharg II”?

I made Boharg I in 2007, it was the second Film I ever directed. It is pretty much the same as Boharg II, but much worse. When I stumbled across that beautiful location in fall 2008, I instantly knew that I wanted to shoot a sequel to Boharg there. I knew that it would be a spontaneus project so I didn’t even bother to find an actor. I know my acting sucks but that’s part of the whole Boharg-thing.

-Whats the concept behind the film?

We started shooting without a concept at all. I was just walking around in random spots in the house. When we looked at the footage after the first day, we realized that the film would be very boring. So we decided to shoot some action sequences on the next day. I had the idea that I would meet a fat, hairy guy in the shower, but the fat, hairy guy couldn´t make it to the shoot, so we improvised and I just met myself. More ideas of making invisible cuts popped up. We shot some scenes, looked at the footage and thought of more ideas how to make these confusing shots.

The story (if there is any) just developed while we were shooting. E.g. in the scene where I see the coffe pot, after I fall to the floor, the camera moves into the hole in the ground. Mantas, the cameraman just thought that the scene is over, but I felt that I would see something there now. When Mantas realized that I was still acting he just moved back to me and made this nice turning camera move.

-How long have you been directing?

I started my film study in 2006, originally wanting to become an editor. In fact I made Boharg I just in order to have some footage to edit. In fall 2007 I shot my first film with an actress. I was so impressed by how she could make things happen and that she could look exactly how I wanted her to look. I was doing very bad result-orientated direction then, but still that experience was so intense that I switched to directing.

-What equipment did you use?

For Boharg II we used a Sony EX-1. It is a nice and reliable camera, and it can record 60 fps (only 720p though), so at 25fps you can slow down the footage to about 41%, what gave us the possibility to make all those nice slow motion effects.

I am lucky that my editor owns that camera and gave it to us willingly, so the only thing I had to pay for were the candles for the shower scene.

-Where can more of your work be found?

faett.wordpress.com/ Is a short stop motion film I made.

-Are you currently working on anything?

I finished my study two months ago and at the moment I am trying to find a balance between working in order to be able to pay the rent and working on my own projects.

Just two days ago I finished the script for my next project “Lapkritis” (Lithuanian for November / falling leaves). It is a low budget short film that takes place in a spanish restaurant in Berlin. It will have actors, cool dolly shots, catering on set and much, much more. I am really looking forward to it. The script is like a kick in the face of Robert McKee (no offense, Story is a great book!) and I like it very much. I have a little blog for the project that I am updating regularly. http://lapkritisfilm.wordpress.com/

-Anything else you would like to add?

Thank you IVYBetty staff and thank you for reading this. This was my first interview, I hope I didn’t write too much. Greetings, David.
